Beastway MTB to end in 2013

After 19 years of organising grass roots mountain bike racing in London the 'Structureless Tyranny', which coordinates the Beastway Mountain Bike Series, have decided to take a year out in 2013.

When the series began 19 years ago the intention was to provide low cost and accessible racing in the London area and over the first decade, held at old Eastway, now demolished and the site of the London Olympic Park, entry grew from 80 or so riders to over 200 riders competing each Wednesday in the summer months.

With the closure of old Eastway, Beastway first moved to Hainault Country Park, which was a hard place to organise at and then moved to the present location at the wonderful Redbridge Cycle Centre, overlooking London. Beastway organisers have been impressed by the many riders that have ventured from the south coast and just as far from other areas to join their fellow mountain bikers in London, and this has spurred them on.

Summing up the reason for the break, John Mullineaux said: "The weekly commute of the Structureless Tyranny was OK when we were at Stratford but now it adds a huge amount of time to our journey meaning that we start at lunchtime and at times don't get home until midnight. This and other commitments mean that we are struggling to balance our lives around the series."

The series is a going concern and although not a huge money earner it is viable and has a good name with many people, and thus if a team, club or someone would like to promote a new series in 2013 the 'Structureless Tyranny' would be happy to advise and help as much as possible. You may have your own ideas, maybe even moving it to a weekend date and give it a new name reflecting a new beginning?

'Beastway' would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the Beastway Mountain Bike Series over 19 marvelous years, especially sponsors Brixton Cycles and all the staff at Redbridge Cycle Centre (and old Eastway).

John says: "We have loved doing it and we will savour the races to come as we complete the 2012 series which end on July 25."
